Transitions on Parochial Staff

Every three years the Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of Saint Mary gather for an assembly called provincial chapter, where they discuss the mission of the Province in New York and New England. From May 14 to May 19, the friars talked about how best to serve the needs of the Church throughout the Northeast. They elected a new provincial council to steer the mission of the Province and make decisions about where and how the friars will serve.

After two months of consultation with the friars, the provincial council has made its ministry assignments. The council’s decisions have led to several changes on the parochial staff of Holy Cross-Saint John the Baptist. These changes will take effect by the end of August.

Fr. Thomas Franks, pastor since 2011, has accepted an invitation to be chaplain at Manhattan College in Riverdale. He will stay in residence at the Church of Saint John the Baptist as guardian of the fraternity.

Fr. Francis Gasparik, provincial minister of the Province of Saint Mary from 2011 to 2017, has accepted the invitation to be pastor at Holy Cross-Saint John the Baptist. He was previously pastor and guardian at the Church of Saint John the Baptist from 1991 to 2002. He has been a friar in residence at Holy Cross Church and will continue to reside there as pastor.

Fr. Ernest Bedard, parochial vicar since 2013, has accepted an invitation to be parochial vicar and fraternal vicar at the Church of Saint Joseph in New Paltz, NY.

Fr. Michele Vricella, parochial vicar since 2015, has accepted an invitation to be parochial vicar and guardian at Our Lady of Sorrows in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Bro. Anthony Zuba, parochial staff since 2015, has accepted an invitation to serve on the parochial staff at Church of the Good Shepherd, Inwood, Manhattan.

Fr. Michael Marigliano, vicar provincial minister of the Province of Saint Mary from 2011 to 2017, has accepted an invitation to be parochial vicar at Holy Cross-Saint John the Baptist.

Fr. John Baptist Riordan and Bro. Salvatore Patricola will remain on the parochial staff.

The friars are grateful for your love and prayers and support over the years. We ask you to keep our outgoing and incoming friars in your prayers as we move forward on our journey of faith together.
